Recently, siggi's provided me with the opportunity to try more skyr as well as their filmjolk so that I could introduce these awesome products to you! I have now developed a bit of a craving for skyr so, siggi's is always at the top of my list!
While spending the holidays away from his home in Iceland, Siggi Hilmarsson dug up some traditional recipes from his family for skyr. (In fact, skyr has been a staple of the Icelandic diet for 1,000 years!) He whipped up some skyr to help him handle his homesickness. From there, siggi's yogurt was born and the US was introduced to this special taste of Iceland. Siggi's skyr is made in New York, Siggi's new home. Siggi uses milk from grass-fed cows from family farms in New York. The cows are growth hormone free.
Siggi's skyr is made from all natural ingredients. It is even sweetened with agave nectar as opposed to some corn syrup concoction as in some other yogurts. That is really appealing to me because I tend to avoid flavored yogurts due to all of the artificial junk thrown into them.
Just from the look of the container, you can tell that you are about to eat a special product. The plastic yogurt container is surrounded by a paper label that can be removed to recycle the two pieces separately. Nice!
I opted to try siggi's strawberry skyr for my little taste test. The yogurt is thicker than your standard yogurt which gives you the feel that you are having something more decadent. Along with the thickness, siggi's has a little more of a cheesy taste. The strawberry really comes through and the sweetness is just right. I mixed my skyr with some fresh fruit and granola. It was perfect!
Filmjolk is a drinkable yogurt based on the traditional drinkable yogurt from Sweden. I have never been a fan of drinkable yogurt, so I did not know what to expect. For the filmjolk, I opted to try the pomegranate and passion fruit flavor. I found the filmjolk to be thick yet smoother than I had expected. There were a few chunks, but they were small. Upon opening the bottle, you could smell the fruit right away. The filmjolk had a very tropical pomegranate-passion fruit flavor. I enjoyed the flavor but only could drink a little at a time since it was very tangy.
Both products are good products and I am so happy to be able to share them with you! Thanks to siggi's, one lucky reader will win a gift certificate for one free cup of skyr and one free bottle of filmjolk. What a great way to try a new product!
