Just because winter is nearly here, it does not mean you can't go on road trips! Here are some ideas for keeping you safe:
- Get a tune up. Check your battery, fluids, windshield wipers and tires.
- Make sure to bring along some extra windshield washer fluid and jumper cables.
- Bring along ice scrapers, brushes and a shovel for snow.
- Grab a flashlight with batteries.
- Can De-Icer may be a life saver. I had to use it often in southern Illinois where we tended to get freezing rain.
- Make a survival kit with blankets, water, nonperishable snacks, a change of clothing and first aid kit. ***I like to bring extra clothing because I don't know if I may get stuck at someone's house.***
- If you have a young child, pack extra of diapers, formula, baby food, etc. Extra toys and games may also be nice if you get stuck in traffic.
- Charge your mobile phone and bring a charger with you. ***We like to have spare chargers just to keep in the car.***
- Check the route before your trip and keep tabs on weather conditions. You may also want to consider staying on routes with more resources if the weather looks questionable.
- Make sure desired destinations are open. Some have varying hours over the winter or may be closed entirely.
