A Little Time and a Keyboard: 10 Tips for Your Winter Road Trip

10 Tips for Your Winter Road Trip

Thursday, December 1, 2016

Just because winter is nearly here, it does not mean you can't go on road trips! Here are some ideas for keeping you safe:

  • Get a tune up. Check your battery, fluids, windshield wipers and tires.
  • Make sure to bring along some extra windshield washer fluid and jumper cables.
  • Bring along ice scrapers, brushes and a shovel for snow.
  • Grab a flashlight with batteries.
  • Can De-Icer may be a life saver. I had to use it often in southern Illinois where we tended to get freezing rain.
  • Make a survival kit with blankets, water, nonperishable snacks, a change of clothing and first aid kit. ***I like to bring extra clothing because I don't know if I may get stuck at someone's house.***
  • If you have a young child, pack extra of diapers, formula, baby food, etc. Extra toys and games may also be nice if you get stuck in traffic.
  • Charge your mobile phone and bring a charger with you. ***We like to have spare chargers just to keep in the car.***
  • Check the route before your trip and keep tabs on weather conditions. You may also want to consider staying on routes with more resources if the weather looks questionable.
  • Make sure desired destinations are open. Some have varying hours over the winter or may be closed entirely.
