Thingvellir National Park in Iceland

My favorite place in the whole world is the stunning Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. I have visited three times and have totally been enchanted each time.

Climbing for a view at Thingvellir in Iceland

Thinvellir is significant both culturally and geologically. Part of a fissure zone, visitors can stand where the North Atlantic and Eurasian Plates are splitting apart.

Amazing landscape at Thingvellir naturally crafted by volcanoes, glaciers and rifting.

The landscape was forged by glaciers, volcanoes and rifting. Exploration provides appreciation of these massive forces of nature. Breathtaking!

Gorgeous Lake Thingvallavatn is Iceland's largest natural lake.

Lake Thingvallavatn is the largest natural lake in Iceland. Despite its very, very cold temperatures, the lake provides a rich habitat for vegetation. Brown trout, Artic charr and three-spine stickleback populate the lake. Views are certainly majestic and give pause for contemplation!

The Althing, Iceland's parliament, began at Thingvellir in 930 making it the oldest running parliament in Europe. The parliament convened there until 1789. Entirely amazing! Today, the Parliament meets in Reykjavik.

Filming location for Game of Thrones in Iceland

Scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed at Thingvellir such as the path to Eyrie. The landscape perfectly fits the narrative of Game of Thrones. Of course, we got a kick out of standing where one of our favorite shows was filmed!

As you can see, Thingvellir is a magnificent treasure and not to be missed. The park is one of Iceland's most popular attractions and is on the famed Golden Circle. It is not far from Fontana Spa ---a geothermal spa worthy of a repose! A magical way to spend a day in Iceland!
