On our road trips east to New Jersey, we often find ourselves spending a little time in Pittsburgh. The city has quickly become one our favorite cities to explore. The city itself is striking especially from a perch upon Mount Washington where you can soak up the skyline surrounded by rivers and bridges.
During this brief visit, my goal was to check out a local spot highlighting area artisans. A quick search led me to the right direction -- The Artsmiths of Pittsburgh. Artsmiths is a haven for the work of many local artisans. Art includes everything from paintings to glass jewelry to pottery to soy candles to prints to scarves and much more. Want to try your hand at art? Artsmiths holds a variety of art classes to encourage the community to explore their creative side.
As you can imagine, Artsmiths is a treasure trove of locally made gifts to bring home. There are gifts in a variety of price ranges and so many different creations that something will surely pique your interest. In the basement, visitors will find an art gallery for larger works including sculptures, furniture and paintings.
In addition to purveying local artwork, Artsmiths has a little cafe with sandwiches, quiches and soaps. You can also sit an sip some coffee or tea. I was pretty content to discover that they have loose leaf tea! What a welcome treat after a long drive! While the food selections are limited, they do have lovely baked treats including biscotti from Pittsburgh favorite Enrico Biscotti. In fact, Enrico Biscotti is the caterer for the sandwiches, soups and other treats at the cafe. I stopped for a spot of tea and a yummy quiche.
If you are visiting Pittsburgh, I highly recommend a stop at The Artsmiths of Pittsburgh to enjoy locally crafted art and to pick up your own little piece of Pittsburgh to bring home!
