Established in 1917, the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon is the oldest continually growing public rose test garden in the nation. Situated in the "City of Roses," the garden was created to save species of roses from being lost to bombings during WWI. The garden is a lovely and vibrant maze of roses:
A maze of roses welcomes visitors to the International Rose Test Garden in Portland. |
Roses in every shape and color uplift the spirit and invite wonder. |
There are a few sculptural elements in the garden including one that you can walk through. This particular sculpture was donated by the family of Frank L. Beach who has been credited with coining the name of "City of Roses" for Portland. The memorial was created by Portland artist Lee Kelly. Walking through a piece of art really helps you pause and take in the essence of where you are. Adults enjoy these elements but I am sure they really leave impressions on children because they present art that they can touch.
