Plenty of weekend fun coming up including maple tapping and syrup events, dinosaur fun, St. Patrick's Day merriment, Comic Cons and more! Here are my picks:

Friday, March 1:
  • March 1 Irish House Party, Raue Center for the Arts, 8PM-9:30PM, Irish musicians and dancers, starts at $20 pp depending on zone, family friendly, order tickets online
  • March 1-22 Virtual Bauhaus, Elmhurst Art Museum, using VR glasses, visitors are students touring the iconic Dessau Bauhaus exploring its architecture, education, design and products. Bauhaus' goal was to harness modern tech to make life better for everyone. The experience is free with admission, see website for more info and open times.
  • March 1-3  Make a Glass Shamrock, Patterson Glass, Mundelein, 10AM-4PM, $35; can also make a flower
Saturday, March 2:
  • March 2 & 3 PaleoFest, Burpee Museum of Natural History, Rockford, 9AM-9:30PM Sat, Sun 9AM-4PM, $12 pp, special hands-on activities, also lectures which may be different fees, check online for more info and schedule
  • March 2  Farmhouse Museum Tours, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 10AM-3PM, tours on the hour, blacksmithing demo at 1:30, free
  • March 2 Mini Golf at Mount Prospect Public Library, 10AM-3PM, 18 holes throughout the library, 19th hole entertainment area, $5 pp, $20 per family, money funds library projects
  • March 2-3 and March 9-10 Festival of the Sugar Maples, Coral Woods Conservation Area, Marengo, 10AM-3PM, learn how trees produce sap and how it is collected, see syrup made in the evaporator house, hikes, free admission, tours start every 15 minutes
  • March 2 Literary Circus, Barbara's Bookstore, Vernon Hills, 10:30AM Chinese New Year Story time; 12PM Dr. Seuss story time with characters, more events through 7PM, see website, free
  • March 2 Rock and Mineral Identification,Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst, 10:30AM-11:45AM, $8 per person, members free, ages 8 and up, reservation necessary (630) 833-1616, admission $5 pp, $2 per child & $3 per teen
  • March 2-3 Maple Sugaring Days:, LeRoy Oakes, St. Charles,12PM-3PM, learn to tap maple trees, learn about sugar bush folklore, see sap thickening into syrup over a fire, take a nature hike, learn how to distinguish trees, taste local syrup, free
  • March 2 Maple Syrup Magic, Plum Creek Nature Center, Beecher, 1PM-3PM, learn how maple syrup is made, learn how to identify sugar maples and taste maple syrup, must register call 708.946.2216 by February 28.
  • March 2-4 Maple Sugaring, Kline Creek Farm, West Chicago, 1PM-4PM, try your hand at tapping with tools from the 1890's, watch maple sugar thicken, taste real maple syrup, free
  • Sap's Rising:  March 2 & 3, 9 & 10, 16  River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, 1:30PM, walk in the maple forest and learn how maple sugaring is done, free
  • March 2 Magic and Nature: Owls, Bats and More, Mayslake, Oak Brook, 1:30PM-3PM, $5 pp, must register, under 18 must be with an adult, for ages 12 and up, learn about folklore and magic around these critters, lecture and walk
  • March 2 Taste the Town, Rolling Meadows, Community Center, 6PM-9PM, taste food from local restaurants, dueling pianos, tickets at the door
Sunday, March 3:
  • March 3 KidsFest, Oak Park Conservatory, 10AM-2PM, celebrate the tropical room, kids can come dressed as favorite tropical animal, free timed tickets available online, hands-on activities and more
  • March 3 Barrington Library Comic Con, 1PM-5PM, artist alley, photo ops, free airbrush tattoos, scavenger hunt, cosplay and more, free
  • March 3 Vernon Hills Comic Con, Aspen Drive Library, Vernon Hills, 1PM-4:30PM, video game competition, all age crafts, cosplay, artist alley, teen fandom crafts (must register), free, more fun
