Elding Puffin Watching Tour in Reykjavik, Iceland

From Reykjavik, you can take a tour by boat to view puffins on one of the harbor's rocky islands. Before we embarked, I did not know quite what to expect.  Would we just see a few specks? Soon after departing, I would be enthralled by all of the puffins flying about the island.

We embarked our tour boat from a pier in the Old Harbor portion of Reykjavik. We sailed with Elding which I highly recommend. The island is not far from the pier and the tour is short overall, so I recommend this adventure to families. However, dress warmly -- it is quite cold on the water!

Puffins All Around

As we approached the island, we could see puffins flying all around it almost in a cloud. Watching the adorably rotund birds was mesmerizing!

I was actually surprised that we got close enough to really take a good look at the puffins. We did have binoculars with us and those without could borrow them from the tour. Unfortunately, I did not bring my good lens with my camera. So, I don't have real close ups. It would have been possible to get nice ones from this tour with the correct lens.

Of course, you can also view other birds as well. If you look closely at the photo below, you will see a black-backed gull and some eider ducks.

Seeing Hallgrimskirkja in the Distance

The overall tour was about 1hr-1.5hr. You can see Hallgrimskirkja in the photo below indicating how close we were to Reykjavik.
