Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve Offers Spectacular Hiking and Views Near Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve in Grafton, Wisconsin offers spectacular gorge and lake views, the opportunity to admire undeveloped bluffs, meanders through wetlands along boardwalks and sublime forest bathing.

Beginning our journey following the boardwalk  surrounded by trees and wildflowers!

We arrived to Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve mid-afternoon and found it quite busy. The popularity of preserve was immediately evident! I recommend trying to arrive early if you can. There did seem to be a decent flow through, so you probably do not have to wait terribly long for a spot if need be. One main loop trail guides you through most of the preserves. Offshoots provide different perspectives.

While researching for our visit to Lion's Den, I immediately keyed in on the gorge and lake views. However, I did not realize how stunning the forested paths will be until we began walking them. Truly incredible! Other segments of the trails take you through wetlands, grassland and prairie.

Various points allow for scenic views of the gorge. We found nice viewpoints from some of the offshoot trails. I am wondering how the preserve changes throughout the seasons!

Then, we descended stairs down to the Lake Michigan shoreline. The shoreline was pretty narrow but the views magnificent!

After a slice of serenity on the beach, we climbed the stairs back up and headed on the trail hugging Lake Michigan. At different points, we could wander a bit off for views of the lake and bluffs. You will definitely want to take advantage of the additional alcoves as well! Each view presents a different perspective.

Each vantage point provided a unique and inspiring view. We did find some visitors finding a spot to sit a little and take it all in. A wider viewing area up on the bluffs provides a picnic spot.

The rough and rugged edges of the bluffs are quite picturesque.

Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve intrigues with a range of landscapes over a very walkable trail. Dogs are also welcome, so you can bring Fido on your adventure! Lion's Den Gorge Nature Preserve treated us to a wonderful nature escape with so many magnificent views of Lake Michigan, the gorge, forest and more!
