Hastings Lake Forest Preserve in Lake Villa offers spectacular lake views which really uplifted us on a recent sunny day. The views truly enchanted us as we embarked on a hike around the lake.

Hastings Lake Forest Preserve maintains 4 miles of paved and gravel trails. We hiked the trail around the lake which is a little over two miles. There are other trails including some that lead to scenic vistas.

Peaceful and Spectacular Views

I have to say, this preserve really surprised me. I truly found myself at peace while savoring lake views. As we ambled around the lake, we noted families peacefully fishing in alcoves and on piers. Many wandered down paths that led them to the edge of the lake. At one point, we observed a swan family enjoying a swim on the lake. Peace all around!

A Variety of Ecosystems Invite

I was not expecting the lushness of this preserve. A visit affords the ability to explore meadows, wetlands and woodlands. The range of ecosystems invites a variety of wildlife.

Of course, we loved the chance to traverse boardwalks! In addition to the boardwalks, we discovered a few little spin off trails that led to different view points of the lake.

Hastings Lake was established in 2003 originally serving as a YMCA summer camp from 1992-2002. The YMCA of Metro Chicago does still maintain a smaller facility on an adjacent property. Nearby forest preserves including Sun Lake Forest Preserve and McDonald Woods increase your options for a nature adventure.

During our visit, Hastings Lake Forest Preserve was ablaze with wildflowers. Stunning! We had such a beautiful day wandering Hastings Lake and look forward to returning. With biking, kayaking, canoeing and fishing also permitted, Hastings Lake welcomes a variety of nature lovers.

We look forward to future explorations at Hastings Lake to admire the spectacular views and see how nature evolves throughout the year. Hastings Lake Forest Preserve has quickly become one of our favorite forest preserves and will continue to enchant visitors for years to come.
