Traversing Through Nature's Wonders at McDonald Woods in Lindenhurst, IL
On our trip to
Hastings Lake, we happened to spy
McDonald Woods Forest Preserve in Lindenhurst. So, a visit was inevitable! During one of the cooler days this week, we hiked along McDonald Woods gently winding 3.8 mile trail traversing through grasslands and woodlands. McDonald Woods surprised us with its range and beauty. We paused a number of times on our hike to absorb the charms of nature at McDonald Woods.

We embarked on our journey through the grasslands. Along the way, I admired wildflowers. While the range of greens throughout the preserve are beautiful, nothing quite matches the delicate brilliance of wildflowers.

Soon, we began forest bathing. Winding through the forest provided us with magical shade. We enjoyed identifying birds. A catbird flew right in front of me and landed below the brush near the trail causing much delight!

We would eventually discover a break in the woods yielding to views of the preserve's lake. I did not expect the fabulous lake and wetland views at McDonald Woods. Each caused us to pause.

As you can see, we savored quite a spectacular day! Among our bird sightings, we counted quite a few sightings of Great Blue Herons! One is standing among the tall grasses below:

Overall, McDonald Woods was quite peaceful during our visit really allowing us to escape. The trails are easily navigable, making this preserve perfect for anyone. We look forward to returning to enjoy the blend of ecosystems at McDonald Woods and to see what else we discover!

Hiking, biking, fishing and cross-country skiing are all enjoyed at this preserve. Additionally, trails at McDonald Woods are part of the Millennium Trail. Plenty of nature experiences to enjoy!
