Greeting explorers with a range of nature experiences including dolomite cliffs, wetlands, prairies and woodlands, Severson Dells Nature Center in Rockford, Illinois provides unique and enticing adventures. Severson Dells once was a farm until nture lovers Harry and Fannie Severson donated their 369-acre family farm to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District in 1975. This donation paved the way for the public to appreciate the Severson's nature haven.

On a recent summer day, we opted for a road trip to Rockford to wander some of the 5-miles of trails at Severson Dells. Immediately, we found ourselves amazingly enrobed in the green splendor of the forest. I marveled at the tree crowns above. So, don't forget to look up!

At several points, we met Hall Creek. The meander of the creek easily calmed our souls for a bit. Each view of the creek is quite unique and will leave you inspired.

After pausing at the creek, we continued forest bathing as our hike wound us through the preserve. We discovered interesting flora and fauna throughout. Fortunately, I brought my birding binoculars and spotted a rose-breasted grosbeak with them! We also heard quite a few catbirds among other birds.

Before reaching the Dolomite Cliffs, we happened upon one of the prairies. After hiking in the forest, one path opened right up to a spectacular expansive view. Quite a spot to take a breath and enjoy the moment!

Carved out by Hall Creek, the dolomite cliffs offer interesting and distinctive views. The environment created along the dolomite cliffs is pretty rare. In fact, some of the plants and animals present are not seen anywhere else in Illinois. So, care must be taken while exploring and visitors should remain on the trails away from the cliffs.

Dells are small cliffs along creeks or rivers hence the name "Severson Dells." The dells certainly captivate and awe. The cliffs range in height from a few feet to 20 feet. It is pretty amazing how plants have been able to grow within the face of the dells. So incredible and interesting!
