Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool enchants visitors with a tranquil, lily-adorned pool framed by native plants and layered stone slabs. While located in Chicago's Lincoln Park, the preserve provides a breathtaking spot of calm tucked inside of a busy city.

Peace in a Buzzing City
We wandered the paths around Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool on a Friday evening. Much of Lincoln Park was abuzz with amblers. However, this particular slice of Lincoln Park maintained a peaceful ambiance. We slowly circled the pond taking in the surrounding native plants.
Designed by landscape architect Alfred Caldwell in the 1930's, elements of the Prairie Style influence can be seen throughout the preserve. Caldwell actually redesigned an 1889 lily pool that was in disrepair molding it into a river meandering through the prairie. The little bungalow along the lily pool exhibits the influence of the Prairie Style. Around the bungalow is a bit of a rock ledge molding spots for reflection. Caldwell's design eventually fell into disrepair as well. We are so fortunate that the hard work of the community and Lincoln Park Conservancy has brought it back to life!

Admiring Nature Moments

Stone paths meander through the oasis treating to vantage points with interesting peeks at the pool. We found a view framed by long grasses and lush trees particularly breathtaking.

Native plants surrounding the lily pool invite a range of native wildlife. We spotted glorious monarch and red admiral butterflies!

Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is tucked away adjacent to Lincoln Park Zoo and near the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk, Lake Michigan and more. We savored our evening stroll through the nature oasis as part of an evening date night. The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is open mid-April through mid-November, so perfect for your warmer weather wanderings in Lincoln Park.
