Magee Marsh Wildlife Area along the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio welcomes visitors to truly walk among the birds. During our summer visit, we not only reveled in the sounds and sights of birds but also soaked up the lush flora of the preserve . As we embarked on the boardwalk through the marsh, we felt transported far away. The completely flourishing environment wrapped us in the greens of nature.

Entering the Boardwalk
The easily identifiable trailhead marked the beginning of the birding boardwalk. Immediately upon entering the boardwalk, we folded into a dense melange of wetland plants. Not too far from the head of the trail, we located an overlook up in the trees. Magee Marsh is particularly known as a high quality wetland thus fostering a home for a wild variety of birds.

The trail is slightly over a mile with a few offshoots. We did spot birds all over along our meander. I do recommend taking time to pause and observe throughout instead of rushing through. We watched a juvenile bald eagle soar overhead. Warblers, catbirds, sparrows and more greeted us. Such a lovely experience!
Wetlands of Magee Marsh enchant. |
The Magee Marsh Wildlife Area was originally purchased by the Ohio Division of Wildlife in 1951. Magee Marsh's popularity in birding launched in the 1990's and has grown ever since.
With fall migration approaching, Magee Marsh no doubt will offer opportunities to see a range of birds that do not live at the marsh at other times of year. About 300 species of birds have been seen at the marsh. During spring migration, the marsh can see 2,000-3,000 tundra swans. Magnificent! If you are visiting during migration, please be aware that access may be limited depending upon crowds.

Splendid Lake Erie Views
After wandering the boardwalks of Magee Marsh, we headed towards Lake Erie to take in the views. We did not have an opportunity this trip, but you can walk along the shore during a Magee Marsh visit.
Ohio's Magee Marsh Wildlife Area presents an incredible nature experience for visitors. We found our mid-summer adventure to be full of nature sightings including birds, butterflies and native wildflowers. To visit the marsh, we diverted from our road trip home from Philadelphia to Chicago and I am so glad we did!
**Since our visit, there has been damage to the boardwalk during a storm. Please check on repairs before visiting.
