Charming, Old Fashioned Christmas Ideas in the Chicago Suburbs
Here in the Chicago suburbs, we have such a variety of Christmas celebrations to enjoy including old fashioned Christmas events. While some that I enjoyed pre-pandemic are still on hiatus, there are many that have returned for 2021! Plus, there are some new ones that have started in recent years. Here are eight ideas to enjoy a bit of Christmas past here in the suburbs:
Historic Holiday Window Walk & Visit with Santa: The Kennicott House at The Grove in Glenview will give you a peek into Christmas past with a live window event. The charming event runs December 2, 3 and 4. Guests must register for time slots. Admission is $12 per resident or $14 per nonresident. There will be a gift for all!
Edith Farnsworth Holiday House Tour: Aurora, enjoy a 1955 holiday adventure, tickets are $25 pp, register online, tix do sell out. The festivities will be ongoing through December 19.
Winter Cheer & Christmas Joy: Abbey Farms in Aurora is the perfect place to enjoy old fashioned Christmas fun! Take an adventure to cut your own Christmas tree or visit the emporium for fantastic gifts. The emporium has a variety of specialty food items and handmade items. Pause for a bit on the patio warming up at the wood-burning stove while playing games. Special Santa visits are available. Check the website for more details, the schedule and to purchase tickets.
Merry & Bright: A Victorian Christmas. Visit Blodgett House in Downers Grove on December 11 for a Victorian-era Christmas. The house will be decorated and visitors will enjoy a luminary walk. Warm up by the fire while listening to Victorian carolers. View trees decorated by the community. The event runs 3PM-6:30PM with time slots. $10 pp, or $15 per non resident. Must register.
Christmas in the Valley: On December 12 from 12PM-4PM, Volkening Heritage Farm in Schaumburg will be inviting the community to an old fashioned Christmas on the farm. This event has long been one of my favorite in the suburbs! Enjoy the farmhouse pipe organ playing holiday music and meet Kris Kringle! Cookies will be baking in the oven and the tree will be trimmed. Admission is paid at event -- $3 pp or $12 per family.
Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright House and Studio during the holidays: Every year, the Oak Park home of the famous architect is decked out with period decorations for the holidays. The tree is absolutely not to be missed! Be sure to reserve your tour online. Tours are $20 per person.
Holiday Express at Blackberry Farm in Aurora: Through December 19, the Holiday Express train transports families through holiday cheer. The event incorporates tons of holiday fun including both new and old traditions. Tickets are $8 pp.
Dickens Holiday Village: Antioch's Dickens Holiday Village includes a growing number Dickens scenes throughout the village. Kringle's Christmas Village featuring ornate dioramas will be indoors. Antioch's transformation to Olde England runs through the New Year and is free!
