The ravine system in Hammel Woods invites exploration. |
The landscape revealed an extensive ravine system. We initially hiked on the paved trail, dodging patches of mud. Natural paths traversing the ravines tempted us so eventually, our curiosity urged us to veer off onto a dirt path.
Interesting Fact: Hammel Woods was named in honor of soldiers that fought in a WWI battle in Hamel, France.

Showing the muddy markings of an early spring path, the trail took us to an amazing overlook of the DuPage River. We spied a bald eagle over the river. Overall, the preserve holds 1.6 miles of nature trails and I recommend exploring them!

All too soon, we began to angle back towards the paved trail. The paved trail is part of the popular DuPage River Trail. While ambling through the forest, we spotted robins, downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, brown creepers and red-bellied woodpeckers. We also heard cardinals. We even enjoyed watching a deer nibbling in a field. What a nature haven!
