Wandering the Mesic and Wet Prairies and Woodlands of Middlefork Savanna
A late fall hike took us to Middlefork Savanna in Lake Forest, Illinois. Middlefork Savanna is home to a rare tallgrass savanna and figures as one the most important sites for biodiversity in Illinois. The preserve has long been a vital ecological research site and only opened to the public in 2002.

While hiking, I quickly began to admire the wetlands of Middlefok. The wetlands drain into the North Branch Chicago River, are environmentally fragile, and support an array of rare and endangered species. We enjoyed the gentle meanders of North Branch Chicago River. Overall, a number of fantastic and ecologically rich preserves hug the North Branch Chicago River. Middlefork is one of the stars along the river.

Much of our particular hike included views of both wet and mesic prairie. We did enter woodlands at one point but largely saw them in the distance. Bur oaks and shagbark hickories dot the landscape. Overall, our hike was quite peaceful. I wondered what the prairie would look like in the summer full of flowers and butterflies. Yet, I relished the rich fall golds, burnished reds and rusty oranges of the landscape as well as the texture of dried leaves and grasses. Some remaining seeds added more to our experience.

Overall, Middlefork Savanna Forest Preserve boasts 5.5 miles of trails for hiking and cross-country skiing and 4.2 miles of trails for biking. When we return, we will probably tackle sections of trail that we missed.

Adjacent to Middlefork Savanna is Elawa Farm. The original farm was constructed in 1917 and constitutes an intriguing architectural experience in Lake Forest. Today, the farm welcomes the community to a variety of hands-on educational experiences including a learning kitchen. The farm currently grows organic veggies and flowers. Additionally, it is home to a Garden Market. The 2022 Garden Market begins May 13 and will be open Fridays and Saturdays 8AM-1PM through October.
As we begin to round towards spring, I am anticipating a future visit to see the prairie abloom in another season. We would love to spot more of the diverse wildlife that call Middlefork Savanna home. We also would like to check out the Garden Market at Elawa Farm.
