A recent summer wander brought us to Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville, Illinois. This preserve has been recommended to me by readers and immediately we could see why. The dense woodlands immediately delighted us and folded us into a world far away from it all.
The Fox River flows through the wooded preserve adding to the tranquil scenery. |
Fox River Views Entice
We ambled through the woodlands, traversing a rolling landscape descending down to the Fox River. We traced a stretch of the Fox River along a paved road. However, we eventually found ourselves on a natural trail. A few natural trails spindle off of this main trail.
Please check schedule before going. The preserve does have periodic closings due to hunting season and the main entrance is closed in the winter.
If you look closely, you will see an egret on the other side of the Fox River. |
As we walked along the Fox River, we spotted an egret here and there across the river. We paused to observe their graceful movements. A few benches allowed for additional repose along the river. Silver Springs State Park encompasses 1350 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and prairie. So, we knew we had much yet to discover.
A rolling natural path guided us through the woodlands. |
Soon, we found ourselves on a natural path through the woodlands. As we hiked, the sun danced through the leaves. We noted a variety of bird calls. The spectacular natural surroundings dazzled us.
Silver Springs State Park features several water features in addition to the fabulous Fox River. We followed one natural trail and found ourselves taking in stunning Loon Lake. While manmade, Loon Lake crafts a remarkable scene.
Discovering Silver Springs Bubbling Gently
Silver Springs gently bubbles from the earth. |
The star of the preserve is Silver Springs. The natural spring bubbles gently from the earth painting a tranquil experience under the trees. I stood upon an overlook and noted a variety of delicately bubbling spots. The spring never freezes and can be seen bubbling even in the winter.
A winding, natural trail on a ridge provided beautiful woodland views. |
After pausing to admire the spring, we began our hike back. We took different trails than on the way and enjoyed weaving through the woodlands. We eventually began hiking on a ridge that yielded a little challenge and beautiful views. We savored the splendid walk in the picturesque surrounding to cap off our wonderful visit.
