Wequiock Falls delicately cascades into the tranquil pool below. |
Descending to the Waterfall
To approach the falls, visitors descend a stairwell and then can take a rocky trail or skip rocks speckled across Wequiock Creek. We initially set out bound across the rocks. However, wedding photos were being shot right in our path. so we chose to take the rocky and sometimes ill-defined trail on the side of the ravine to stay out of the pictures. Taking your time on the rocky trail is quite important to safety. It is muddy in spots and quite slippery.
Once we made it closer to the waterfall, what a view! The flow of the waterfall varies seasonally. We lucked out and saw it with such a nice, glorious cascade.
Exploring the Niagara Escarpment
The waterfall falls over a segment of the Niagara Escarpment. The magnificent ridge extends from southeastern Wisconsin through the Door Peninsula up through Michigan's Upper Peninsula through southern Ontario to Niagara Falls terminating in Rochester New York. Exploring the ravine affords splendid views of the rock formation.
The Niagara Escarpment is the result of uneven erosion leaving dolomitic limestone cliffs or escarpments. Underneath the dolomitic limestone is a softer shale that erodes much more easily. As the shale erodes, the stronger dolomitic limestone remains.
During our recent adventure, we also explored the Niagara Escarpment at Cave Point County Park in Door County which I will discuss in a subsequent post.
Stepping stones dotting Wequiock Creek provide for perches for views of Wequiock Falls. |
We enjoyed wandering the creek bed and taking in different views of the waterfall. There also is an overlook for a nice observation point. However, I recommend getting closer to the waterfall if you are able to.
A little bridge across from the waterfall. The observation platform is above. |
Wequiock Falls is adjacent to Hwy 57 which many visitors take to Door County. Every day, many travelers just pass by this treasure. However, pausing at this wonder is a worthy diversion. The waterfall and surrounding gorge quickly enchant. The gorge is surrounded by a park where there is plenty of space to picnic. Additionally, informative signs tell the geologic and archaeological history of the area. I am glad that we took a little pause to enjoy the serenity of Wequiock Falls.
