Brilliant Fall Colors Dancing in a River at Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve in Cherry Valley, Illinois

Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve in Cherry Valley, Illinois unfolds a peacefully picturesque location for a nature respite within the Winnebago County Forest Preserve system. Nestled along the Kishwaukee River, we quickly discovered that the preserve delights with absolutely stunning views.

Within the preserve, hikers will find a trailhead to a 2.25 mile paved recreation trail. This trail is cleared during the winter, so the preserve welcomes adventure in all seasons. I love a nice winter hike, so I will definitely keep Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve on the list. During our recent visit, brilliant amber and deep red leaves framed much of the trail.

Visiting during the height of fall colors here in Northern Illinois, we paused at a variety of points in the preserve to admire the artistry of nature. Reflections of fall colors illuminated the river. Truly a remarkable forest preserve for fall colors in the Rockford area!

Meandering along the Kishwaukee, we noted its calmness at points and gentle rapids at other sections. Walking a long a calm stretch, it was quite novel to reach the rapids!

The preserve is home to the stone Fort Vincennes picnic pavilion. We began our journey near the pavilion and walked along field to a view point of the river. There is another shelter -- although wooden -- on the other side of the river.

Along the drive in the preserve, there are a number of pull over spots with views. We paused to soak in the scenery. At one spot, we observed geese just relaxing enjoying the afternoon.

Additionally, rock cliffside provided another interesting point. Cliffs invite an opportunity to view cliff dwelling plants. I always have to check out exposed rocks!

Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve is a favorite for fishing, canoeing, and picnicking as well as hiking. The Kishwaukee River Recreation Path establishes a nature amble from Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve to another of our favorite Rockford area forest preserves -- Blackhawk Springs Forest Preserve!

While the trail did have some rolls to it, we found the trail fairly gentle leading us on a tranquil, calm walk. We located an overlook point with a wonderful view of the Kishwaukee River. Soaking in gorgeous views of the river truly cemented our wonderful experience that Kishwaukee River Forest Preserve. Overall, Kishwaukee Forest Preserve is a solid choice for a Rockford area hiking trail!
